Mother’s drink is in her handbag

her dog barks at the freeway  
as the uptown drives away  
from their offices and dietaries

Dad sits down in his armchair  
watching spiders on the floor  
making bets with one another  
who’ll be the first to walk out the door  
it’s a palace of distinction
